Poems

Poetry for Amol Titus is a source of endless discovery and creative experimentation. Writing poems from the age of five he has experimented with form, style, content and imagery. Its an open ended experiment through which he continues to learn and develop his craft. An experiment in whose crucible must smolder the interplay of the outer and the innermost.

In the introduction to Modern Traumas he recalls “in high school I remember reading about the plight of some elderly widows in Eastern India who were abandoned to eke out hand-to-mouth existences in temple cities in the states of Orissa and Bengal. Their condition was a telling reminder of the poverty, caste and illiteracy related oppressions that are still practiced and which continue to dot (or more accurately blot) certain regions of the world’s oldest civilizations. Photographs of these shriveled women with their vacant stares moved me to write in February 1985 a poem titled The Widow in which I tried to capture this sense of hopelessness.”

No shoulder of love, no warmth of care
No lap of mercy, no hope of prayer

Only darkness to breathe, shadows to caress
Only memories to cuddle, illusions to dress

No stroking of hair, no smile to assure
No knowing knee, no touch to cure

(excerpts from The Widow, 1985, reproduced in Modern Traumas)
